Basehor is located in southern Leavenworth County on land that once belonged to the Leavenworth, Pawnee and Western Railroad Company. The Railroad sold the land to the Townes family who then sold a part of the land to Ephraim Basehor in 1873. In 1889 the railroad was complete, the rail station was open and Ephraim began to lay out the town that would bear his name. A grain elevator, stockyard, creamery, hardware store, grocery stores and blacksmith shop followed. At the turn of the century, Basehor grew rapidly. But in 1922 Ephraim died and trains no longer came to Basehor. Then, during the Great Depression, a fire roared through the business district and destroyed most of the businesses in the town. The town survived because the concept of suburban development brought new life in the form of refugees from city life seeking homes in the quiet town of Basehor.
Leavenworth County offers its residents a great location close to major universities, the state capital, metropolitan areas, good schools and excellent medical facilities. There are thriving industrial parks, available commercial and residential land, and plenty of opportunity for business growth.
